I posted this on a now-dead forum a long time ago, but since we’re sharing Re-Emergence Day stories, sharing again

I had to break a prize candle early, and now everyone is mad at me [19M] for ruining Re-Emergence Day. AITA?
My extended family got together for our annual Re-Emergence Day gathering in Hamilton. I have this one rich aunt [51F] who has a habit of getting gifts for people that are over-expensive. Maybe it’s unfair for me to be annoyed about it, since my dad [48M] hints she’s helping pay for my school. But there’s something about the give she has where she gives gifts loudly, like the has power over us.
Anyway…I was bored at this party, and most of my cousins/brothers are younger than me [{4..14, {M,F}], so I was checking out the prize candles. And I totally saw a really gaudy one with glitter in it that definitely had a key inside. I 100% knew that was from my aunt, and rolled my eyes HARD.
Later, I went outside to get some air and a garbage truck was pulling up. The driver [41M] yelled at me if I knew whose car was blocking his way. I looked over it was a bright red van with a bow on it - obviously a gift from my aunt to someone. So I went inside, palmed the candle secretly, and managed to snap it in half outside. It fit! Moved the car out of the way, and snuck back inside.
When I was back in, everyone was re-inserting the batteries back into their analogue clocks, so they didn’t notice me trying to use a lighter to seal the halves of the candle back together, with the key inside.

I did get caught later during the prize candle ceremony when someone noticed the candle had been broken. My cousin [4M] ratted me out cuz he witnessed me coming back in I guess. My aunt got mad at me because she said she had a spare key, and I mouthed back “you looked too important to bother” which might have been too much.

So, Am I The Asshole?
