Re-Emergence Day

This was the Re-Emergence Day story I was told as a child. We even acted it out in school one year.

Once Upon a Time there was a Little Phoenix

It was very lonely, as it had no parents, because a Phoenix gives birth to itself

It also had no friends, because it was always on fire, so no one could get close to it

It spent all its days waiting for that special moment when it would die and be reborn

And for one millisecond be able to interact with another Phoenix

But a hundred years is a long time to wait

At first the little Phoenix eagerly kept an eye on the time

And surrounded himself with as many clocks and watches as it could

But as the decades passed, the clocks and watches seemed to taunt him with their slow pace

And one day, in a fury of impatience, the little Phoenix destroyed them all

It had all but given up hope that it would ever die and re-emerge as a new Phoenix

But it turned out that was the very day, the very moment, it was due to be reborn

And the fire it emitted to destroy the clocks and watches also set off its rebirth

And as it died, and was reborn, the little Phoenix saw its new body

And was finally happy

Does the new phoenix see the old phoenix? Or does only the old phoenix see the new as it is dying?
