Re: Share how you celebrate today!
When I was a lot younger, I was always scared of re-emergence day. I never felt truly emerged, and to emerge again, as something different felt a huge burden. I would look at the stopped clocks and they'd be a welcome break, where I could reflect in a pocket of time. And as my family wasn't from North America, our traditions didn't always match. I would be envious of those lucky folk who would eat pitted fruit, knowing that my food would be largely mushroom driven. But the envy was really a way to distract myself from the pressure of figuring out what new skill or talent I could boast about on re-emergence day. What artifact I could point to to show that I had re-emerged.
I still carry that fear (although I now have an odd pride about eating mushrooms), but this year was lucky. I was invited earlier by some friends to join in a skiing/snow shoveling trip around Lake Tahoe. Mindful of today I chose instead to try to learn how to snowboard so I could come out as being somewhat skilled at a new ski sport.
So today, after the mushroom soup and the recital of The Little Phoenix that Could, I will show to my friends a video of myself going down a mountain on a somewhat different kind of device, thus demonstrating that I have staved off calcification for one more year.

I’m sorry to be sappy, but this is going to be the first Re-Emergence Day my partner and I have actually gotten to spend together, and it’s really exciting. His family didn’t do glass cookies, so I’m baking them with my grandma’s recipe. (Side note, I finally understand why my brother and I always had to cajole our mom into it—my kitchen is a wreck and purple fairy lights are surprisingly hard to find.) My partner plays guitar, which will make the demon songs way more fun to sing, and promised to teach me a couple of French verses.
I saw someone else post about the old Canadian specials, and wow that takes me back—I grew up right over the border so we listened to CBC Radio a lot, and honestly their RE Day coverage was so much better than NPR’s. So we might try to find one of the Mike Myers shows on YouTube.
Ok, time to clean the kitchen and get the dogs into their costumes. Happy Re-Emergence Day, everyone!
